About GBM

Greenwich Borough Mariners (formerly Woolwich Training and Swimming Club) is a long-established swimming Club with a proud history stretching back over many years. We are (and have been for over 50 years) one of the leading competitive swimming Clubs in the County of Kent and in the Greenwich borough area.

We are committed to providing the best in coaching and training facilities to enable all our swimmers to achieve their full potential. We therefore have a modern, progressive, structured training programme catering for all abilities, from Learn to Swim all the way up to Top and Masters Squads.

We currently have around 200 members of varying ages and abilities, ranging from our Learn to Swim through to a World Record Holder and a Senior GB International.

Our swimmers regularly qualify for the annual Kent County Championships where in 2010 we achieved 136 Top Six Places, 2 BAGCAT winners, 3 Event Best Performances for Multi Disability swimmers and 3 County Multi Disability Records. Our swimmers also regularly qualify for the annual London Region Championships and the British Gas National Championships in which 6 swimmers have qualified in 2010. One of our swimmers qualified and attended the British Gas Swimming Championships (50m) in 2010 and similarly one of our swimmers qualified and competed at the British Gas Swimming Championships 25m Grand Prix 2009 where he got into the B Final of 100m Backstroke.

Swimmers also take part in the London Borough of Greenwich Championships where in 2009 we achieved 155 Top Six Places. A number of swimmers have also represented their schools at the Kent Schools Championships, London Schools Championships and the English Schools ASA National Championships. Our swimmers also compete at the London Youth Games representing their home borough.

Our most able swimmers compete in Division 1 of the prestigious National Swimming League (London Region) whilst our younger swimmers compete in Division 2 of the Kent Junior League and in Division 1 of the M11 Region of the National Swimming League. GBM also takes part in various Inter-Club trophy galas and Open Meets throughout the year, to ensure that competition is available to all our swimmers at levels appropriate to their ages and abilities.

Our success has only been made possible by a dedicated team of qualified Swimming Coaches and Teachers headed by Peter Withey.

Implementing our success and excellent training by the coaches, GBM became Swim 21 accredited (a Club of Excellence) in 2005.

We believe our training fees to be very competitive in relation to the other major Clubs in South-East London that offer similar levels of water time and qualified coaching expertise.
